Take Five
Each month, we ask a different MonsterCommerce merchant the same five questions regarding their online business and its success. This month's featured merchant is StandsAndMounts.com
MonsterCommerce Merchant since: 3/4/2003
Owner: Caroline Moretto
Best-Selling Product: TV stands
- What is your favorite feature about your site right now?
The site design. We just had our site redesigned by the MonsterCommerce design team. We wanted our site to stand out with a showroom sort of feel instead of the warehouse feeling of many online stores. The design team did this for us.
- What was one major obstacle to your store's success, and how did you overcome it?
We initially had an online store at MonsterCommerce at which we sold audio video equipment as well as furniture. Selling electronics on the net is extremely competitive, too competitive for a small business. The margins were too tight to support a healthy business. Our margins weren't tight on the furniture, so we decided to start a new niche site for just the furniture. Niche sites can exist and grow on the net because the competition is not so fierce.
- To what do you attribute most of your site's success?
Click-through advertising. When we first started selling on the Internet, we used optimized HTML pages to try to come up in the top spots on search sites like Search.com and Yahoo. Click-through advertising allowed us to buy those spots and to concentrate our efforts on building our store's product offerings and supplying customers with a great deal of choices.
- What is the best or most rewarding experience you've had so far with selling online?
Our biggest reward is many little rewards really. Every day, we get emails from customers who send us thanks and praise. These kind gestures are the most rewarding return of selling online.
- What web site or online tool or resource would you not be able to live without?
MonsterDataPort. Without it we would not be able to create data feeds to supply to online advertising sites like Shopping.com, Bizrate, Nextag and more. MonsterBooks is also high on our list, but, as you have to have sales in order to create a need to import into QuickBooks, DataPort is the most important MC plug-in that we use at this time.
