Meeting online security standards

By Erin Eschen
Web Content Editor, MonsterCommerce

PCI stands for Payment Card Industry. MasterCard and Visa set a deadline for online payment processing and data storage protection standards to be met by all online merchants. By June 30, 2005, every online merchant must take certain steps toward protecting confidential consumer information such as credit card numbers.

Search engine optimization in five easy steps

Promoting your site on the Web can be expensive and complex, but taking advantage of search engine behavior to drive targeted traffic to your site can result in a favorable long-term return on your up front investment, whether that investment is your valuable time or money. We've put together a quick guide that outlines five simple steps to getting your site found and indexed by the major search engines.

Take Five

Each month, we ask a different MonsterCommerce merchant the same five questions regarding their online business and its success. This month's featured merchant is ShopBillHallman.com

MonsterCommerce Merchant since: 11/24/2003
Owner: Bill Hallman, Inc.
Best-Selling Product: Shoes

  1. What is your favorite feature about your site right now? Easy access to products.

  2. What was one major obstacle to your store's success, and how did you overcome it?
As always, it is merchandising, but online marketing is very important also.

  3. What do you attribute most to your site's success?
Marketing and advertising - We send out a lot of email from a list developed through the actual retail stores. We have used Google AdWords, which gets you the kind of exposure that you want for a low cost. Everything has to be done in a low-cost, high-impact way. We also use CitySearch.com for exposure. One of the things that has probably helped us the best is exposure in Lucky Magazine because the general fashion public is our target market.

  4. What is the best or most rewarding experience you've had so far with selling online?
Every time an order comes in and you see that email, it is exciting.

  5. What Web site or online tool or resource would you not be able to live without?
The entire back-end of MonsterCommerce. Our sister company HIP, Inc. has built four MonsterCommerce stores for various businesses because of these features and the excellent customer service.
