Your buy button can make a big difference in your bottom line.
First of all, I recommend changing the text of your buy button to "add to cart." Studies have shown that buyers shy away from commitment. "Buy" forces commitment, whereas "add to cart" indicates a later choice to purchase or not to purchase. You want your buttons to say "lets go on a date" rather than "lets get married."
Second, make your add to cart button large. It is arguably the most important thing on your entire website. Make sure it is large, obvious, and if possible, above the fold.
Lastly, do not try to be "cutsie" with your add to cart button. Use the specific words "add to cart." Don't use terminology to complement your site theme (such as "add to wheelbarrow).
For an example, take a look at Amazon.com. They spend millions on buyer testing and you can take a look at their results for free :)
Feel free to email me or post in our forums if you would like to discuss the topic further. I hope you enjoy this series and that it helps you with your site.
